In most of Panama's mainstream news media, most egregiously in El Panama America and La Estrella and on the MEDCOM channels, there is a steady drumbeat of propaganda about how FRENADESSO, the umbrella group that forced the Torrijos administration to at least temporarily back down on a Seguro Social reform package that over time would have tens of thousands of elderly Panamanians sleeping on the sidewalks and eating out of garbage cans, is acting in bad faith and obstructing the national dialogue about social security by insisting on a change in methodology for the talks.
Well, now, everybody knows that SUNTRACS leader Genaro López --- now the nation's most important labor leader, whose union is the heart of FRENADESSO --- is a commie radical. He says so himself. But any honest person who has observed how he and his union have behaved in negotiations over the years would also have to admit that SUNTRACS is very astute about what the market will bear and routinely signs and lives up to contracts that provide for substantially less than all-out communist revolution.
